History
The Old English Sheep dog originally was bred in the UK in the late nineteenth century. It was bred for herding and a guardian of life stock. It is reported that the dog was bred from the breaded collie and a Russian dog.
The dog became popular in the 50’s, 60,s and 70’s as it was featured in several popular movies, such as, “The Shaggy Dog,” and the “The Shaggy DA.” However, the dog is high maintenance. So, its popularity has waned.
Physical Characteristics
The dog is a large and strong compact canine that is squarely built. Its limbs are taller than its withers. Its head is shaped like a square. Its muzzle and skull should be equal in length. The eyes are normally brown, blue. The Old English Sheep Dog should have ears that are droopy. The dog has a black nose and a tail that is normally docked. However, some countries have outlawed the practice of docking a dogs tail. Coat is normally grey or while and his fur covers his eyes.

Averages 21 inches or more.
Weight
Averages between 60 to 100 pounds.
Personality
This dog is noted for being spirited, active and friendly. The dog is very intelligent and adapts easily. The dog is also good with children and other animals. However, they may tried to herd its family members. The dog has a heavy coat. However, it is does not shed heavily.

The dog needs a moderate level of activity.
Best Owner
The dog does best with an active family living in a rural or suburban environment.
Special Considerations
Heavy Attention and frequent grooming is needed. However, you can avoid frequent brushing if you decide to shave the dogs coat.
