The Akita was originally developed in Japan, over 300 years ago, as a fighting dog, guard dog and hunting dog. It’s specialty was hunting large game. The Akita is revered in Japan as its image represents good health. At one time, the Akita almost met distinction. But, it survived and the Japanese has recognized the Akita as a national monument.
Physical Characteristics
The Akita is a large, heavy and well-developed animal. It’s body is larger than it is tall and it has a barrel chest. It has a head shaped as a triangle and square jaws that are powerful. It has a long tail that is carried over its back. The Akita’s has an undercoat that is thick and soft while its outer coat is short and harsh.

Temperament
The Akita is characterized as being loyal, courageous companion that is affectionate and docile with family members. However, the dog is wary with strangers. The dog makes an excellent guard dog. It can be a tough dog to train as it is often stubborn and requires extensive socialization.

Special Needs
Yard that is fenced, leashed at all times in public, extensive socialization and training.
Ownership Requirements
Due to the large stature, of the Akita and its stubborn nature the dog is not for novice dog owners. Also, the owner should be in a suburban area where the dog can stay outside when needed.
Health Concerns
Autoimmune disorders, myelopathy, elbow and hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, retinal atrophy.
