Working dogs
Working dogs vary from guard dogs to herding dogs, and others. Guardian dogs were bred to watch out over persons, property, and/or livestock. One of the oldest Guardian breeds would be a Tibetan mastiff. The Tibetan mastiff has been a guard dog for thousands of years. Some guardian dogs, such as the Rottweiler, want to live with their families and serve as personal guards. However, livestock guarding canines desire to live largely independent of people. So, the dogs may be reserved. Guardian dogs tend to be reserved, large, and they are gentle with family and friends. However, when provoked the can be fierce protectors of the family. Guarding dogs are protective of their family. However, this can be a problem as the are wary with strangers. Guardian dogs need to be owned by people that are dog experienced. You need to have consistent and firm training with these animals. One thing to remember for guardian dogs is that they can be wary of strangers. So, these dogs must be socialized as puppies. Also, the Guardian dogs should receive obedience training.
Herding dogs
These dogs are particularly intelligent and very lively animals. These dogs are high maintenance and require owners I can spend time with them. These dogs if they are not kept busy will get into mischief. For example, they will likely dig up your plants and chew holes in your favorite shoes.
Herding dogs are rarely aggressive. However, they have a tendency toward nipping and herding their owners. These animals are bred to deal with large animals without fear. So, physically correcting your herding dog will likely be ineffective. These dogs to best with firm, positive, and consistent training that does not involve harsh behavior.
Herding dog’s instinct is to herd. However, most city people do not have anything to herd. Therefore, you should introduce your hurting dog with activities such as agility, herding trials, or fly ball. Herding animals will do best with owners that are experienced with dogs.
