In spite of the fact that the Italian Greyhound has been in existence for centuries, the precise source of this handsome species of canine is absolutely unknown.  Italian Greyhounds were  thought of as “Miniature Greyhounds” and were found in abundance throughout areas of southerly Europe. They were particularly admired by Italian noblemen.

One day during the 17th century, this dog species entered in England and rose in fashionableness with nobility.  They came to be just as popular in England as they had been in their native land of Italy. This dog breed became more and more fashionable and reached its peak of popularity during the leadership reign of Queen Victoria.

Later this time period, the Italian Greyhounds started to decline quickly. In actuality, after the end of World War II, these hounds had all but vanished. The cause for this occurrence is unknown, but it is hypothesized that the dwindling of the species was because of poor breeding quality over many generations. Even though their quantities had declined to the verge of extinction, quite a few Italian Greyhounds made their way to America day during the late 1800s and the species was eventually restored.

Temperament
The Italian Greyhound is a somewhat small dog that loves to run at fast velocities and chase anything that will run from it. These canines are very gentle and a bit on the delicate side. Italian Greyhounds are known to be reserved, shy, and make a charming family pet, particularly around youngsters.
Care Consideration of an Italian Greyhound
This is one species of dog that is best suited to live with an active family.  In other words, if sitting on your sofa all day is your concept of spending time with your pet, the Italian Greyhound would not be the perfect pet. They require an active way of life with plenty of sprinting outside and vigorous exercise.
Italian Greyhounds definitely dislike cold conditions; however, they can stand higher-than-normal temperatures due to their short-hair. Grooming is negligible with only the irregular brushing needed in order to take off dead hair.
Health Facts
The Italian Greyhound can last up to 17 years when in good shape, with 13 to 14 years being the median. The only major health concerns that they have is periodontal sickness. Lesser concerns include PRA, leg breaks (from running), patellar luxation, and epilepsy.
