Marley and ME – Labrador Retriever Popularity Increase

Posted January 21st, 2009 by begbie

It is always the bane of all animal shelters and dog enthusiasts when a new dog movie comes out. This means that some misguided soul or careless moron will go out an buy a dog without researching the breed.

For example, this happened when 101 Dalmations was released.  Puppy mills and backyard breeders started breeding the dog without any thought to the good of the breed.  Also, people buy dogs that maybe misrepresented on TV.  For example, “Eddie” on the TV Show Frasier was a Jack Russell Terrier. On that show the dog was docile and sat still while it stared at Kelsely Grammer. So, based upon that show the Jack Russell Terrier would be a perfect apartment dog. NOT.  the Jack Russell Terrier is a high-strung hyper dog that needs an attentive owner that is not suitable for apartment life.

So, the new movie “Marley and Me”  show a Lab. Labs are high-energy hunting dogs that belong in a suburban or rural area.  Thus, apartment dwellers or people with small yard should not own a lab.

The following ad, in my local paper, is the example of exploiting this movie syndrome.

“LAB Marley & Me Pups Yellow & black, M & F awesome pedigree!! 3mos, unique small to medium in size with incredible working bloodlines, AKC, all very active & happy. Reduced price $500.”

Do You Think Newspapers Should Not Allow This Kind of Advertisement?  Or am I just a cranky malcontent who should get a life?
