Sight Hounds
As the name implies, a sight hound sees its prey and then chase after their chosen victim. Sight hounds have long legs, barrel chest, thin, and are extremelly agile. Examples of a sight hound would be the whippet, greyhound, borzoi and saluki.
Scent Hounds
The scent hound uses its smelling ability to get their prey. Once a scent hound gets a scent of their prey they are relentless. They are physically characterized as having long ears, large nasal passages, and a sturdy body. The scent hounds are most often used for finding lost people. Examples, of scent hound is the blood hound, and blue tic hound.
Other Hound Dog Breeds
Their are other, dogs in the hound family, that specialize in chasing and stalking large animals. Elk hounds, scottish deer hounds and the great dane are examples of these types of canines.
