1. AKC / American Kennel Club-
The AKC is devoted to the advancement and welfare of pure-bred canines. Is a USA organization that registers purebred dogs. For the AKC, to register the dog, the dog’s parents must be registered with the AKC as the same same breed, and the litter that the dog is born into must be registered with the AKC. Once these criteria are met, the dog will be able to be registered as purebred by the AKC.
Organization
The AKC is comprised of approximately 500 separate clubs. Each club in the AKC’s legislative body, votes on the rules and regulations that govern dog shows, obedience, and field trials. A registry of recognized breeds and records of the ancestry of registered pure-bred dogs are kept in the book. It also provides educational materials for dog owners and sponsors rescue groups for every breed. According to the AKC in 2007 the most popular breeds in 2007 were:
